Improving physical wellness is often an individual effort.
It's you that decides to diet, you that dedicates yourself to an exercise program, and you that has to find the time to facilitate those commitments.
This can be difficult to sustain when so much time is spent in the office.
That's where a corporate wellness program comes in.
Investopedia defines a corporate wellness program as
"An employer's approach to improving employee health, wellness programs include activities such as company-sponsored exercise, weight-loss competitions, educational seminars, tobacco-cessation programs and health screenings that are designed to help employees eat better, lose weight and improve their overall physical health."
From an employee's perspective, it's easy to see the value in these type of programs. It helps encourage physical wellness inside the office, so that maintaining your progress is easier.
From an employer's perspective, it's a little bit more difficult to see the value points in the investment in these type of programs, but they are there, and are incredibly powerful.
Consider the following quote from Soeren Mattke, the lead author of the Rand Report.
"We find that workplace wellness programs can help contain the current epidemic of lifestyle-related diseases, the main driver of premature morbidity and mortality as well as health care cost in the United States.
Once you think about it, it's not hard to draw the connection between corporate wellness programs and a decrease in lifestyle-related diseases.
With so much time spent in the office, wellness programs help influence that time to be productive and beneficial for your health, not derogatory.
Healthier employees are more productive, are less stressed, take less sick days, and typically show a lower turnover rate than unhealthy employees.
So, employees, if your company doesn't offer strong wellness programs, make sure to talk to your HR department about the possibility of improving that, and employers, if you are looking for a wellness program to start for your employees, why wait?
Increase your company's morale and productivity by starting the wellness program initiative.
